How to find a new job

If you want to find a new job, be prepared to invest your time and effort into the process. After all, it can be tricky to find the perfect role to suit your talents, especially when it comes to sifting through mountains of job adverts.  

Chances are, if you apply for every job that you find, it will be obvious in your applications. Sadly, you probably won’t make it through to the interview stage.  

Aside from this, if you’re not hearing back on your applications, it might be because you’re searching for the wrong jobs for your experience or interests. With this in mind, here are our tips on how to find a new job that suits your needs! 

Is it the right time to find a new job? 

Before you embark on your job search, it’s important to consider whether you’ve exhausted all your options in your current job. While you may think you’re unhappy, sometimes all it takes is a few minor tweaks to get you back on track. It may save you from making a knee-jerk decision. Conversely, you may love your job, but if the money falls short, have you tried to discuss this with your employer? 

If you’ve spoken with your manager and done everything in your power to make a change, but still fancy a new challenge, then you’ll know it’s time to move on. However, once you’ve realised you want to find a new job, don’t burn any bridges.  

You’ll still need your contacts at your current job for a reference. What’s more, you may want to keep your connections intact, as you never know what will happen in the future!  

Consider your options 

So, you’re ready to find a new job. Now it’s time to think about your options. Before going about your job search, you must first consider what you’re really looking for. Whether this is a change of industry, relocating to a bigger city like Dublin, or a new challenge completely; sit down and list your priorities.  

There might be some areas that you really can’t get around. For example, did you have a non-compete clause in your contract that restricts you from joining a competitor? Or maybe you’re leaving your current company with a bad reputation and a poor reference. 

From this, you can create a more refined impression of the type of role you’re looking for or company you want to work at. As a result, it’ll be easier to find these jobs once you know exactly what you’re after. More money? More flexibility? Outline what you’re after and your vision for the future and suddenly finding a new job becomes a whole lot simpler! 

Network to help you find a new job 

Instead of going down the traditional route of finding jobs yourself, why not use your professional network to scout out opportunities?  

Having a long list of professional contacts is beneficial for this. Which is why it’s important to be a good networker, both inside and out of the office. Reach out to your contacts to let them know you’re actively seeking new positions and would be open to any suggestions they can offer. Of course, if you’re still in employment, you’ll want to be fairly discreet about it rather than announcing to everyone that you want to find a new job.  

If you have a particular company or industry in mind, reach out to connections that will have the best contacts and information. This is one of the best ways to find the jobs that you’re looking for, while also strengthening your relationships with your connections as well! 

Use job boards 

If you want to find the best jobs for you, then using job boards like CV-Library, is the way forward.  

Job boards are grea for viewing a wide range of current openings in any industry or city you desire. So if you’re looking for inspiration, why not hop online and have a quick scan? It’s one of the simplest ways to find a new job. 

You’ll have to act fast though. Competition is usually tight; and while there are thousands of jobs available on these job boards, you’ll be up against like-minded job seekers. So, do some initial research on the roles you’re after so you can refine your search terms and find your favourite vacancies easily! 

Attend job fairs 

Attending jobs fairs can be extremely valuable and should be a high priority if you’re looking for a new job. After all, they’re great for getting yourself in front of recruiters and having a face-to-face discussion with employers about the roles they’re hiring for. 

It’s a different experience to scanning through a job board or networking with your professional contacts, but is worthwhile if you have the right attitude. Talk to as many employers as possible and ask relevant questions about the roles they have on offer, the company and the benefits of working for them.  

You never know, you may leave with several new contacts and an interview lined up for a new job!  

Ready to find a new job? 

Finding a new job can be hard work and demoralising if you can’t find the perfect role right away. However, maybe you’re looking in the wrong places or using the wrong tools? 

There are plenty of resources you can use to find a new job. However, you must be proactive and use your initiative. Unfortunately, your new job isn’t going to just land in your lap! Take your job hunt by the horns and get in touch with your professional contacts, scan through the vacancies on job boards and attend job fairs. All of these steps will help you to get closer to finding your new job. 

However, once you’ve found the role you want to apply for, this doesn’t mean the hard work stops. Make sure your application is in pristine condition and you should be ready to go!
